Why should we learn Tajweed?
Reading Quran is very important, and reading it with Tajweed is more important as it is an order from Allah to read the Quran properly, Allah said:
"ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَتْلُونَهُۥ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ"
سورة البقرة, اية 28
Those We have given the Book follow it as it should be followed. It is they who ˹truly˺ believe in it. As for those who reject it, it is they who are the losers.
Surah Al-Baqarah [2:121]
What Tajweed includes?
1. Linguestic
The word linguistic, something relating to a language, in Tajweed means to beautify it. For example, you add Tajweed to your recitation to make it beautiful and melodious. In Arabic, this is called “المعنى اللغوي”.
2. Technical
Linguistics is not the only thing in Tajweed; there’s something called technical. This means that you should give every letter it’s characterisation. What I mean by characterisation, is by making every letter clear to its right, its description and its origination of word. In Arabic, this is called “المعنى الاصطلاحي” meaning idiomatic language.
What are the benefits of Tajweed?
Tajweed is included in Al-Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)].
1. The people who recite the Qur’an, the noble and obedient angels will accompany them.
One of Al-Hadiths states that the people who recite the Qur’an, the noble and obedient angels will accompany them. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, says that the Prophet (PBUH) said
“The one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be accompanied with the noble and obedient angels. And the one recites with difficulty, stammering or stuttering through the verses, will get double the rewards”.
This is from the Bukhari.
What the Prophet (PBUH) is trying to say is that the one who has difficulty reciting the verses, yet they use their very best effort, they will get the double amount of reward a reciter gets when they recite smoothly and beautifully.
2. The people will be amongst the best of people.
Another Hadith states that the people will be amongst the best of people. Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said the Prophet (PBUH) said
“the best of you are the ones who learns the Qur’an (in this case, understands, memorises and learns from it) and they teach it to others“.
May Allah grant mercy to the Ustaadhs and Imams teaching Islam and helping those learn the Qur’an.
3. Reward will be multiplied by ten.
For every letter we read from the quran, we get 10 rewards from it. The Tirmidhi states that those who read a letter from the Book of Allah (the Qur'an) he will have a reward; and that reward will be multiplied by ten. A letter is not a verse. For example Ha Meem. Ha is a letter and Meem is a letter. This means we get 20 rewards. Through the entire Qur'an, there are 6,236 verses. Multiplying that by 10 we get 62,360 rewards. But we get even MORE! Since all verses are uneven (one is longer than the other) we can get an extraordinary amount of rewards. Allah is literally giving up lots of rewards just by reading.
The Qur’an will also lead us to Jannah. The Qur'an will be our intercessor, the one who is stronger and helping the weaker. Whoever puts it in front of them, it will lead them to Paradise, and whoever puts it behind them, it will take them to the Hellfire. This is an authentic (real) hadith found in At-Tabaraanee.
From all of this evidence, we can understand that we can be the best of the people, the ones who get more reward, the ones who are accompanied by the obedient angels and the ones who are led to Jannah.
