Pray or Sit? The Ruling on Entering During the Friday Sermon

Friday prayer is one of the greatest weekly acts of worship in Islam. Many people feel confused when they enter the mosque while the imam is already delivering the sermon: should they pray two rak‘ahs (units) of greeting the mosque, or sit down and listen مباشرة؟

In this article, we explain the ruling in a simple way and present the opinions of scholars.

📌 First: Ruling on Entering Before the Imam Ascends the Pulpit

Scholars unanimously agree that if a person enters the mosque before the imam ascends the pulpit, it is recommended (Sunnah) to pray two rak‘ahs (Tahiyyat al-Masjid).

This is based on the general statement of the Prophet ﷺ:
"If one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he prays two rak‘ahs."

➡️ In this case: praying is a confirmed Sunnah without disagreement.

📌 Second: Ruling on Someone Already Seated When the Imam Begins the Sermon

If a person is already sitting in the mosque and the imam ascends the pulpit, they should not stand up to perform any voluntary prayer.

✔️ Reason: Listening to the sermon is obligatory
❌ Praying at that moment would distract from this obligation

➡️ The ruling: Do not pray; remain seated and listen attentively.

📌 Third: Ruling on Entering While the Imam Is Delivering the Sermon

This is the point where scholars differed:

🔹 First Opinion: Pray Two Short Rak‘ahs

(Adopted by the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools)

They rely on the hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ instructed a man who entered during the sermon:
"Stand and pray two rak‘ahs, and keep them brief."

➡️ Meaning: Pray quickly and lightly, then sit down.

🔹 Second Opinion: Sit Without Praying

(Adopted by the Hanafi and Maliki schools)

They argue that:

Listening to the sermon is obligatory
Prayer at that time distracts from it
Obligations take priority over recommended acts
⚖️ How Do We Reconcile Between the Two Opinions?

Both views are supported by valid evidence. Therefore, many scholars concluded:

✔️ Whoever prays two short rak‘ahs has done well
✔️ Whoever sits and listens immediately has also done well

➡️ There should be no criticism of either action.

⚠️ Important Etiquette During the Sermon

Whether you choose to pray or sit, you must observe the following:

❌ Do not step over people’s shoulders
❌ Do not talk during the sermon
❌ Do not distract others

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"If you say to your companion ‘Be quiet’ while the imam is delivering the sermon, you have engaged in idle speech."

✅ What Is the Best Practice?

The best approach is to arrive early at the mosque to avoid اختلاف (differences) and prepare calmly for the prayer.

If you arrive late:

If there is enough time → pray two short rak‘ahs
If the sermon is nearly over or the mosque is crowded → sit and listen immediately
📝 Conclusion

If you enter the mosque while the imam is delivering the Friday sermon:

You may pray two short rak‘ahs
Or sit down immediately and listen

👉 Both actions are valid, and neither should be criticized

What truly matters is:
focus, attentiveness, and avoiding harm to others
