Engagement in Islam: A Promise, Not a Contra

Engagement in Islam: A Promise, Not a Contra

The Beginning of the Engagement Stage

What Happens After Selection

After the process of selection is complete, the engagement stage begins. It is an important step on the path to building a family.

In Islam, engagement is not a binding contract, but rather a promise of marriage. There is a significant difference between a contract and a promise:

A contract carries legal consequences

A promise may or may not be fulfilled

Therefore, during this period, the man and the woman are still non-mahram (strangers) to one another. What is permissible between الزوجين (husband and wife) is not permissible during engagement.

The Reality of Engagement in Islam

Engagement is simply a period of getting to know one another.

However, this acquaintance should be:

Guided by the mind (intellect)

Not driven solely by emotions

It is a time for:

Reflection

Understanding

Careful evaluation

—not emotional attachment

The Danger of Letting Emotions Lead

One of the most common mistakes during engagement is neglecting the role of the mind and allowing emotions to take control.

The heart alone can be blind, and emotions may prevent a person from seeing faults clearly.

As it is often said:

“Loving something can make you blind and deaf.”

So we must ask:

Should we be blind during engagement?

Or should we be aware and perceptive?

The answer is clear:

We must be aware, thoughtful, and observant

The Importance of the Mind in Choosing a Partner

During engagement, it is essential to prioritize the mind over the heart.

This ensures that the decision is based on:

Sound principles

Clear standards

Rational thinking

Engagement is a stage of careful selection, not emotional surrender.

After Marriage: The Role of the Heart

Once marriage is completed—by the will of Allah—and the choice has been made wisely through the intellect, the role of the heart and emotions begins.

Marriage naturally includes:

Minor mistakes

Shortcomings

At this stage, we need:

Patience

Forgiveness

Overlooking faults

✨ ﴿ وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ﴾

Translation: “Live with them in kindness.”

Explanation

This noble verse calls for:

Kindness

Compassion

Mutual respect

It encourages overlooking small mistakes and building the relationship on mercy, not constant criticism.

When the Balance Is Reversed

Problems begin when this balance is reversed:

Emotions dominate during engagement

Then disappear after marriage

As a result:

Hidden faults become visible

Disagreements increase

Each partner focuses on the other’s shortcomings

At that point, the meanings of:

Love

Mercy

Companionship

begin to fade, and the essence of the verse is lost.

The Correct Principle for a Successful Relationship

The entire concept can be summarized in one simple principle:

Before Marriage

Use your mind to:

Think

Evaluate

Choose wisely

After Marriage

Use your heart to:

Show compassion

Practice patience

Give love

Your Path to a Degree with Purpose
